(a) Distribution of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG):
MARCOFED has been handling LPG distribution by setting up agencies in Kohima and Phek in the year 1996 and 1997 respectively with two fold objectives:
- To meet the ever increasing fuel needs of the public at a reasonable
- To help in the conservation of forest in the
This service is being accessed by a huge chunk of the population in the two districts as well as neighboring districts. MARCOFED has also provided LPG connection to several households living below poverty line at a subsidized rate in collaboration and co-ordination with the State Forest Department. Though no scientific survey has been undertaken to assess the impact of the LPG distribution on the environment, it is common knowledge that the service has helped reduce the degradation of the forest. Public leaders have often commented that with the increased use of LPG in the households, forest conservation has improved drastically.
(b) Successful operation of Ice plant:
Many of the Federation members are engaged in marketing perishable commodities and in the absence of ice plant they were subjected to selling the produce at a throwaway price. Many of them have sustained losses and stories of deserving local entrepreneurs were no different. To meet the emerging need of its members and local entrepreneurs, MARCOFED set up an ice plant in Dimapur. The operation of the plant has ameliorated the plight of many members and local entrepreneurs alike.
(c) Godowns and Marketing complexes:
MARCOFED has godowns and marketing complexes set up in key districts with the sole aim of providing storage and outlet facilities for local farmers and vendors to market their products effectively. Being acutely aware of the demands and requirements of the public, MARCOFED under the Revamping Programme, has managed to gradually expand its reach by way of establishing godowns and marketing complexes in places such as Merapani, Wokha, Medziephema, Tuensang, Phek, Pfütsero, Mon, Longkhim, Jalukie and Dimapur.

Minor Forest Produce (MFP) is a major source of livelihood for tribals who belong to the poorest of the poor section of society. It provides them critical subsistence during the lean seasons, particularly for primitive tribal groups such as hunter gatherers, and the landless. The State Government appointed MARCOFED as the implementing agency and has signed an MoU with TRIFED for implementation of the scheme which has the potential to generate large scale employment opportunities empowering the tribal populace.
(h) Micro Financing Scheme Under National Minorities Development & Finance Corporation (NMDFC) Central Scheme.
MARCOFED’s proposal to be nominated as the State channelizing agency for implementation of Micro Financing Scheme Under National Minorities Development & Finance Corporation (NMDFC) has been approved by the State Government. Under the Micro Financing Scheme, loan is provided to weaker sections amongst the minorities organized into Self Help Groups (SHGs) who run small businesses, trade artisans, tiny/cottage, agricultural and allied activities which aims for encouraging entrepreneurship for starting or augmenting their income generating activities. MARCOFED strives to play a greater role in the development of agriculture, industry, trade and commerce etc. in the state. In order to strengthen local entrepreneurship and employment generation within the cooperatives, including women self-employment and make income generation sustainable, it would be a great opportunity for MARCOFED to enhance their capital access and formation and organizational capacities.
Therefore, MACOFED has decided to expand its scope from consumer to production in the days to come under the PPP model or inviting investors.
