OVERVIEW
The Nagaland State Co-operative Marketing & Consumers’ Federation Ltd. (MARCOFED)
is a prominent apex-level co-operative institution in Nagaland, established in 1968.
Sponsored by the State Government, MARCOFED plays a crucial role in supporting the
state’s agricultural economy and ensuring the availability of essential commodities. It
serves as a bridge between farmers, consumers, and the government, promoting the
marketing of agricultural produce and acting as a distribution hub for essential goods.
Core Functions
Agricultural Produce Marketing:
MARCOFED acts as a vital intermediary for farmers and producers, helping them sell
their agricultural and forest products. It strives to ensure fair pricing, improve market
access, and facilitate the processing and sale of these goods, thus boosting the income of
local farmers and producers.
Distribution of Essential Commodities:
The federation manages the supply and distribution of essential consumer goods across
Nagaland. MARCOFED helps stabilize the availability of foodstuffs, fertilizers, seeds, and
other critical supplies in remote and urban areas, addressing the demand of the population
as well as supporting farming communities with necessary agricultural inputs.
Co-operative Support System:
MARCOFED operates as a central agency that coordinates the activities of various district
and local co-operative societies. Through this co-operative network, MARCOFED
strengthens rural development by providing a platform for co-operatives to collectively
market their produce, store goods, and access supplies at competitive rates.
Storage and Processing Infrastructure:
One of MARCOFED’s core objectives is to provide adequate storage facilities and
processing units to reduce post-harvest losses and enhance the quality of agricultural
produce. The organization operates multiple godowns and marketing complexes across
Nagaland to facilitate the storage and distribution of goods. This infrastructure not only
serves the needs of its members but also benefits the wider community by ensuring food
security.
Retail and Consumer Services:
In addition to its agricultural marketing functions, MARCOFED is involved in the direct
dealership of petrol and diesel retail outlets. This expansion into retail is a recent
development that supports rural and semi-urban infrastructure, creating opportunities for
economic growth within these regions.
A Comprehensive Co-operative System
MARCOFED fosters a holistic co-operative ecosystem, benefiting both producers and consumers by
offering centralized services like bulk purchasing, processing, storage, and marketing. It helps local
communities gain more value from their agricultural produce, reducing reliance on intermediaries,
and making consumer goods accessible at fair prices. By serving as a central coordinating body,
MARCOFED supports the economic well-being of its members across Nagaland, contributing to the
socio-economic growth of the region.
Key Role in Tribal Empowerment
MARCOFED uplifts tribal communities through the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for
Minor Forest Produce (MFP) scheme and partnerships with TRIFED. It ensures fair
market access for forest produce and implements the Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs)
initiative, creating sustainable income opportunities for tribals by adding value to forest
products and improving their marketability.
MANAGEMENT & ADMINISTRATIVE SETUP
MARCOFED is governed by a Board of Directors that includes representatives from
the Nagaland State Government and Co-operative Societies from across the state’s
districts. This board provides strategic direction, formulates policies, and offers
guidance to ensure the federation’s effective functioning. The Chairman, appointed
by the government, leads the Board of Directors, while the Managing Director
oversees the day-to-day operations of MARCOFED, ensuring that policies are
implemented efficiently and goals are met. Together, the board and management
work to strengthen the co-operative sector, support agricultural marketing, and
enhance essential services delivery in Nagaland.
